This site was
designed to exchange information about Duelling Pistols, and to provide more
factual/fun information to my friends that have an interest in the subject and
may want to collect. I do buy and
sell sets of guns for my personal collection.
I hope I can help new collectors avoid simple mistakes and make
informative buying decisions. I
will always promote the fun side of collecting.
I believe that if you do not take pride in and derive pleasure from what
you collect you should do something else. At 7 pm on the 20th of May, 1845 the last notable duel was fought on British soil. First Lieutenant Henry Charles Moorhead Hawkey of the Royal Marines had challenged the lover of his wife, Isabella. Lieutenant Hawkey and his opponent, Mr. James Seton formerly of the 1st Dragoon Guards, were the principals. They met on a beach four miles from Gosport and James Seton was fatally wounded. James was not my Great-Great-Great-grandfather; thank god! Because he died, and Lieutenant Hawkey ran off to France. I was born in Germany in 1954, on a U.S. military base. My parents were career Military. I spent half my pre-college life living in Europe where I started collecting. I am an Eagle Scout, and was president of my High Schools student body in Fayetteville, North Carolina. I graduated from Georgia Tech in Atlanta and took my first real job with IBM. Today my wife and I buy, start, run, and sell small companies. We live in Atlanta, Georgia and are in the process of moving southeast and retiring. We have collected many things,
German items from the wars, musical instruments, medical instruments, cars,
guns, trains, wild game heads, etc. Being
brought up in a military family gave me a unique exposure to formal ceremonies,
and weapons. I can still remember
the first time the tank I was riding on was destroyed by the other team in the
woods of Germany. I was tagged as
dead and out of the match. The
military and rules of engagement fascinated me.
I received both a congressional and presidential appointment to the
United States Military Academy but chose to go to Georgia Tech.
My gun collecting started early and I have everything from target pistols
to fully automated (class 3) machine guns. I have hunted in Africa and have a trophy room.
I have a broad knowledge of weapons in general, but enjoy the duel, the
rules of the duel, actual documented duels, and Duelling Pistol Sets more than
any other weapon I have encountered. The duel to me is the most fascinating of all rituals. Formal rules under which individuals could take each other’s lives and have the blessing of society. I have a relatively large library on the subject. I do not have a reading grasp of foreign languages, so I am somewhat handicapped unless the material is in English. I am more than willing to include any information that someone sends me on this site. Please be sure it is factual and documented, if not I may still publish it; if I have your permission, to say it is your opinion. I will provide four services with this web site: 1) I will respond to questions or inquiries about duelling posted to the discussion board, you are more than welcome to respond to any question of interest to you. 2) I will buy and sell sets of Duelling Pistols. 3) If you want to sell a set of Duelling Pistols, send me five digital pictures in my format on a white background: a) open case, b) closed case with guns out front, c) accessories, d) lock, hammer detail, e) unique features or top & bottom details (carving/engraving). If they are a nice quality pair, I may place them for sale on this site. I will also need any information you have on the guns and the maker. My fee will be 5% if the guns are sold through this web site. So a $10,000 set of pistols would be offered for sale at $10,500. Inquiries would be directed to your provided contacts. Upon the sale of the guns, my fee would be paid. Both buyer and seller would be aware of my role. 4) I will research sets of guns for individuals to provide more history on the guns or the maker. I can also find actual duels that took place in history where your guns could have been present. In my opinion this makes the guns much more interesting, informative, and educational. These services have to be negotiated based on what you want done.
